With this issue we have published 12 issues of this magazine. This has been an exciting and interesting year for me as I have watched the magazine develop. There have been several people who have stepped forward to help edit this magazine and others who are now contributing articles and reviews for the magazine each month. With the help of these people this magazine has become one of the accepted resources for card modelers all over the world. In this editorial I will talk about some of the things that have impressed me during our first year.
When I started the magazine I offered free models to anyone who would write a construction review for it. It seems that this has not worked very well. At this point in our publication all the reviews that are coming in are of models that the reviewers have purchased them self. When asked why, the answer was that people do not want to have time limits put on their builds and would rather build models of their own than one we supply. This concerned me for awhile but it appears that we are receiving plenty of reviews.
We started out doing construction and photo reviews but as we continue to publish it appears that we are getting more photo than construction reviews. Again I asked why and the answer I got was time. It appears that those who build card models do not feel they have the time to take pictures of the model as they build it. The are quite willing to take photos of the completed model. The answer of why I got when I asked was that they have limited time and would rather build the model than stop and take pictures as they build. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues as we go into our next year.
We started the year strictly dependent on the dealers and designers for models to review. As we progressed it became evident that there were certain types of models that we were not getting to use in our reviews. We then started purchasing and re-selling those models that we could not get from our contributing dealers. By doing this we have been able to expand the different types of models that are now reviewed in this magazine. I believe at this point that each issue of the magazine has something in it for anyone who builds any type of card models.
When we started the response from the dealers was excellent. They supported us in anyway that they could. We had problems in getting the publishing companies to recognize the magazine. Mostly because most of these were located in Poland, did not speak English and didn't think there was a large enough market in the U.S. As the year ends we are beginning to see them recognize that this is not the case. In the last month I have commitments from a publishing firm in Germany and two in Poland to send us models to review. This is a big step and one I am very proud of. It seems that we are making a splash in the card modeling world and are beginning to become recognized all over the world.
What an interesting year! As we go into our second year of publication I am very excited waiting to see what is going to happen next. To all the dealers, designers, editors and writers who have contributed to making this a great year, WELL DONE.
